Fish Nets
There are many types of hand held nets, ranging from small nets for catching microscopic organisms to feed fish, to large nets for catching large fish.
Here are just a few examples of the different kinds of nets and their uses:
Landing nets usually have a depth of about 30cms and have 6mm mesh around the side of the net and 2.5mm mesh on the base. This is so the water releases from the sides quicker than the bottom. Light duty landing nets are usually used for catching one fish at a time and are used mainly by coarse fishermen. Heavy-duty landing nets are used to catch many fish at a time and are for professional use in fisheries.
Aquarium nets are used to catch tropical fish and come in many different shapes and sizes. They have a soft and fine mesh in order to prevent damage to the delicate and beautiful fish.
Pond nets are not only used to catch fish, but also to collect fallen leaves and debris from ponds. Pond nets are made with many different kinds of meshes.
Koi nets have very little depth, just a shallow pan. This is because the koi are not usually caught with the net and they are just guided through the water into a bowl or tub. Some Koi are worth thousands of pounds so it is better not to touch the fish with the net in case damage occurs. Koi can grow very large so nets can be up to one metre in diameter.
Seine nets are used to clear ponds, lakes or reservoirs of fish. They are long sections of netting, long enough to stretch from one side of the water to the other and just a bit deeper than the water itself. They have floats roughly 30cms apart along the top of the netting and weights or weighted rope along the bottom, so it makes a wall in the water. They have ropes off either end for two people to slowly walk the net from one end of the lake to the other, to move the fish and contain them into a small area to be caught. The meshes vary in accordance to the size of the fish to be caught.
All of the nets listed above are manufactured by Norfine Nets Ltd.
